Rocky Mountain Altitude Powerplay 3: 110 Nm, 720 Wh and plenty of Canadian muscle for 2026
While much of the eMTB industry is moving towards smaller, lighter and quieter motors, Rocky Mountain has chosen exactly the opposite:
sticking with its own philosophy.

The new Altitude Powerplay 3 2026 arrives with an evolution of the Dyname S4 Pro system, completely revised suspension and enormous power figures for a production eMTB.
And here's the interesting thing:
this bike arrives just as the market is changing radically because of the DJI Avinox.
Until recently, Rocky Mountain was a benchmark for raw power in the full-power segment.
Now it faces much lighter, more compact and more technologically advanced rivals.
The new Altitude Powerplay 3 does not try to be a light or minimalist bike.
Rocky Mountain has opted to create an aggressive machine, very powerful and extremely configurable.
But the problem is that the 2026 market is no longer the same as in 2022.
Now there is DJI Avinox.

The big change: Rocky Mountain develops the Dyname S4 Pro
The previous generation was already known for one of the market's most forceful motors.
However, the new version goes even further.
| Motor | Torque | Peak power | Approx. weight | Philosophy |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dyname S4 Pro 2026 | 108-110 Nm | 1000 W | 3.2 kg | Extreme power |
| Bosch CX Gen5 | 85-120 Nm | 750 W approx. | 2.8 kg | Balance |
| DJI Avinox | 110-150 Nm | 1500 W+ | 2.5 kg approx. | Technology + weight |

Here's the problem for Rocky Mountain:
Just two years ago, these figures seemed impossible.
Now DJI offers practically the same power… but in a much smaller, lighter motor.
What has changed with respect to the previous Altitude Powerplay?
The Altitude Powerplay launched in 2022 was already extremely powerful, but several aspects drew criticism:
- High weight.
- Questionable visual integration.
- More noticeable mechanical noise than Bosch or Shimano.
- Less refined rear suspension.
- A somewhat “tractor-like” feel in slow sections.

Rocky Mountain seems to have listened to many of those criticisms.
1. New LC2R suspension
The frame's biggest change is the adoption of the new LC2R, inherited from the unassisted Altitude models.

The brand claims to have reduced:

- pedal kickback,
- unwanted movements,
- fatigue in long descents,
- and traction losses under power.

In theory, these new kinematics should make the bike far more controllable on fast, rough trails.
eRIDERseMTB opinion
The previous generation had plenty of motor power, but in some situations felt very heavy and unwieldy.
If Rocky has genuinely refined the suspension, this generation could transform the handling.
2. Greater technological integration

The new Powerplay 3 has a “Jumbotron” display integrated into the top tube.
That may sound trivial, but in 2026 power alone is no longer enough.
People want:
- modern displays,
- advanced apps,
- telemetry,
- fine adjustments,
- clean integration.
This is where DJI Avinox is putting serious pressure on established brands.
The big elephant in the room: DJI Avinox
Here comes the most important part of the analysis.
Until very recently, Rocky Mountain had the following territory almost to itself:
- huge torque,
- extreme power,
- impossible climbs,
- “mini motorcycle” feeling.
But everything changed when DJI appeared.
Why is DJI Avinox revolutionizing the market?
DJI has achieved something that seemed impossible:
- a very compact motor,
- very low weight,
- absurd power,
- extremely advanced electronics,
- immediate response,
- futuristic integration.
That has put virtually every established manufacturer under pressure.
| Aspect | Rocky Dyname S4 Pro | DJI Avinox |
|---|---|---|
| Power | Very high | Very high |
| Weight | Heavier | Much lighter. |
| Integration | Adequate | Very advanced |
| Natural feel | Very direct | More refined |
| Service support | Traditional MTB Network | Still unknown. |
| Long-term reliability | Better established | Still to be demonstrated |
Does that mean Rocky Mountain is finished?
No.
And this is where a lot of people are wrong.
Rocky Mountain still has several major advantages:
- very aggressive, well-developed geometries,
- years of developing its own motors,
- a distinctive feel on technical climbs,
- a strong identity.
Some riders are not looking for a lightweight bike.
They're looking for a wild bike.
And the Altitude Powerplay 3 looks exactly like that:
a machine designed to conquer seemingly impossible climbs and descend like a mini electric DH bike.
The looks: this will divide opinion
If one thing is sparking online debate, it is the design.
In Pinkbike forums and comments, many users are criticising:
- the visual bulk of the frame,
- the motor area,
- the “bulky” look,
- the less refined appearance compared with Avinox.
And honestly...
they have a point.
Compared with some new, ultra-clean and compact Avinox eMTBs, the Rocky looks more “industrial”.
But remember:
the most spectacular-looking bikes in photos are often not the best descenders.
Rocky Mountain has historically put real-world performance ahead of visual marketing.
Range and battery
Rocky retains the 720 Wh battery.
That may seem behind systems with 800 Wh or more.
But there's one important detail:
the bike accepts the 314 Wh “Overtime Pack”.
That leaves a total capacity close to:
1034 Wh
That is a serious amount of capacity.
For Alpine routes, e-bike parks or very long days, it could offer enormous capability.
Where does this bike really sit?
The Altitude Powerplay 3 is not competing with lightweight eMTBs.
It competes with:
- full-power Specialized Turbo Levo,
- Orbea Wild,
- Trek Rail+,
- Canyon Strive:ON,
- and the new Avinox platforms.
But Rocky Mountain maintains a very different philosophy:
- less lifestyle marketing,
- more gravity/enduro focus,
- a more mechanical, direct feel.
Who should buy this bike?
✔ It suits you if:
- you like aggressive eMTBs,
- you prioritise power,
- you ride hard enduro,
- you want to climb near-vertical slopes,
- you are not obsessed with weight.
✘ It may not suit you if:
- you want a minimalist bike,
- you seek extremely low weight,
- you value clean looks,
- you want a very natural feel.
eRIDERseMTB final conclusion
The new Rocky Mountain Altitude Powerplay 3 arrives at the worst possible time...
and perhaps the best, too.
The worst because DJI Avinox has completely changed the rules of the game.
But also the best because Rocky Mountain has decided not to copy anyone.
While many brands start to resemble each other, the Altitude Powerplay 3 still has its own personality.
You may or may not like it.
You may find it huge or extreme.
But it's certainly not a boring bike.
eRIDERseMTB verdict
One of the market's most radical and powerful eMTBs.
Rocky Mountain is not trying to follow trends:
it is trying to remain Rocky Mountain.
Amid the Avinox influx, that may be its greatest strength.
