Bosch Performance Update 2.0: 120 Nm for free, but context matters
Bosch has responded to Avinox with a major update: Performance Update 2.0 takes CX and CX-R motors up to 120 Nm and 600% assistance in specific modes. It is huge news on paper, but it is worth understanding what changes and what does not.
| Function | What does it bring? | eMTB PRO comment |
| 120 Nm | Greater maximum drive | Useful, but not everything. |
| 600% assistance | More assistance relative to your pedalling input | May use more battery |
| Extended Boost | Adjustable motor overrun | Very useful over technical obstacles |
| 12A Charger | Smart System fast charging | Interesting for travel or tests |
What changes with the update
The update adds more peak torque, more assistance and new functions including adjustable Extended Boost, Drivetrain Tensioner, Trick Check and live-data compatibility with some Garmin Edge devices. Bosch also introduces a 12A fast charger for the Smart System.
For everyday riders, the key point is that this does not mean buying another motor: on compatible bikes, the improvement comes through software. That extends the commercial life of many Bosch eMTBs and avoids the feeling of “I bought the bike and it is already outdated”.
120 Nm, yes, but not in every situation
According to the published information, 120 Nm is available in specific modes including Race, Turbo, eMTB+, Cargo and Auto. That matters: it does not mean every mode, bike and rider will feel the same effect.
It also depends on the Smart System, firmware, manufacturer configuration and update availability. When buying used, verify it in the app or with a shop; do not trust an advert simply because it says “Bosch 120 Nm” in capitals.
Extended Boost and Drivetrain Tensioner
Adjustable Extended Boost can be very useful over technical obstacles, allowing the motor to keep driving briefly after pedalling stops. Used well, it helps clear steps. Used badly, it can push the bike when you do not want it to.
Drivetrain Tensioner aims to reduce play and delay before moving off, preloading the system so drive engages sooner. In technical eMTB riding, that could matter more than wattage claims, because immediate response makes a difference.
Quick comparison against Avinox
Bosch does not match the Avinox M2S's raw peak output, but it offers something else: a service network, compatibility, brands fitting its motors and a huge user base. Avinox impresses with figures; Bosch reassures with its ecosystem.
For a rider who travels, buys locally or wants readily available spare parts, that network matters greatly. For those seeking extreme power and integrated technology, Avinox is currently setting the agenda.
eMTB PRO opinion
This is a strong response from Bosch, but it does not automatically make every Bosch bike the best buy. Geometry, battery, weight, brakes and price still matter most.
My advice: if you already have a compatible Bosch system, update it and test it sensibly. If buying, do not overpay just for “120 Nm”. Check the battery, condition, warranty and real-world motor delivery.
