The problem to be solved by the insert

An insert may cost less than a rim, but buying one out of fear can also leave you with a heavy, hard-to-maintain wheel without solving the original problem. Before choosing a Vittoria Air-Liner for your eMTB, establish what is actually happening: rim strikes, sidewall cuts, air escaping at the bead or a need for an emergency way home after a puncture. These are not four names for the same fault.

This guide compares Light XC, Protect Trail, Enduro, E-Bike and Downhill, and explains how to choose the complete setup. It does not announce a launch today or reproduce someone else's test. The figures come from official product pages checked on 25 October 2026; practical recommendations are our editorial judgement. We have not weighed these products or carried out a comparative impact test.

First, diagnosis; then, buy. Persistent air loss, a damaged casing or a distorted rim needs inspection. Putting foam inside does not repair those faults.

If your current setup works and you are not having problems, keeping it is also reasonable. The goal is not to accumulate accessories but to address a specific limitation without creating others. What you install matters, as does how much work removal will involve when it is time to change the tire.

The five versions are not interchangeable

This table lists claimed dimensions and weights, not our measurements. "Rim width" means internal width. Always check the exact product reference: an insert physically fitting does not prove that the combination is approved.

Version and SourceWheel / tireInternal rim widthDeclared weight
Light XC29 / 2.1–2.4 inches25–30 mm55 g
Protect Trail29 / 2.1–2.6 inches26–33 mm100 g
Protect Enduro27.5 or 29 / 2.4–2.6 inches28–35 mm125 / 135 g
Protect E-Bike27.5 or 29 / 2.4–2.6 inches28–35 mm135 / 145 g
Protect Downhill27.5 or 29 / 2.4–2.6 inches28–35 mm175 / 185 g

The weight pairs correspond, in order, to 27.5 and 29-inch wheels, not front and rear. All these options are for tubeless use; the Light name does not identify a lightweight inner tube. Nor should the lowest weight become a universal quality ranking.

Vittoria distinguishes Enduro and Downhill foam densities and positions E-Bike as an option specifically for electric bikes. This does not allow every model to be ranked for durability by weight alone: that would require a common impact-energy and installation test. The catalogue guides selection; it does not replace that measurement.

A discrepancy worth noting: the Trail packaging photographed by the brand itself is printed with 140 g, while its current product page states 100 g. We do not assume it is the same revision or invent an explanation. Before buying, ask the seller for the code and specification of the product they will supply.

Tire size is only the starting point

Note each wheel's diameter, the tire width and the rim's internal width. On a mullet bike, buying two 29-inch inserts out of habit will not work. Do not confuse the rim's external width with its internal width: measure according to the wheel documentation or ask your workshop to identify the model.

Then check the tire and rim requirements, including approval for tubeless use. An insert does not make an unapproved combination compatible or extend its pressure or load limits. Repeat the check if you change tires; the same printed width does not guarantee the same actual volume or ease of installation.

The Enduro product page describes a closed ring and distinguishes its foam from the Downhill version. In the same documentation, Vittoria recommends considering Downhill at the rear for particularly aggressive use. We present that as manufacturer guidance, not a requirement for every eMTB or a guarantee against damage.

Our editorial approach would be to start with the actual problem, not the bike's label. For gentle riding without repeated rim strikes, overbuilding the entire setup may add no value. For demanding descents with repeated damage, simply chasing the lightest model is not an adequate answer either.

The valve is part of the system, not a detail

The insert product pages require Multiway valves and include one 40 mm valve per insert. This is not permission to keep any valve just because it is already installed. Check that the air outlet and base shape are compatible with the insert; if the setup cannot inflate or deflate normally, stop and inspect the installation.

Vittoria offers its Multiway in several lengths and states that the core and seal are replaceable. Choose the length to suit the rim. Do not automatically buy another pair: first check what comes in the box and whether the included length allows proper access for your pump.

When a wheel loses pressure, locate the leak before blaming the insert. A poorly seated valve, dirty valve core and damaged rim tape need different solutions. Noting where bubbles appear during a leak check can save unnecessary removal; if you cannot interpret the result, take it to a workshop.

It is also worth checking at home that your tool can remove the valve core and that your pump connects properly. Discovering an access problem mid-ride is no better just because the component comes from a well-known brand. What matters is that the system is usable, not merely that each part looks compatible on paper.

Sealant: check the formula, not just the brand

The official Protect Trail, E-Bike, Enduro and Downhill pages warn against sealants containing ammonia. The Enduro and Downhill pages also include a general statement of compatibility with any sealant, followed by that restriction. We do not read "any" as overriding it: confirm an ammonia-free formula compatible with every component.

The photograph shows the Universal Tubeless Tyre Sealant range from Vittoria, not a sealant necessarily included with the insert. We do not use its trade name to promise that it will seal every cut. Major damage or a deteriorated casing may require repair or replacement even if sealant remains.

We prescribe neither a universal sealant quantity per wheel nor an automatic pressure reduction. Follow the quantities and intervals in the current documentation for your combination. If instructions for your exact tire, rim and insert are missing, ask before improvising a mixture. Repeatedly adding more sealant does not tell you how much usable liquid remains.

Record the product, installation date and top-ups. It is less eye-catching than changing a motor, but it helps distinguish a new puncture from a setup neglected for months. For more on that maintenance without repeating every step here, see our general tubeless guide.

Preparation and removal: do not rely on brute force

Check the rim tape before covering it with an insert. The Tubeless tape helps create an airtight seal, but its width must suit your rim and follow the rim's instructions. A photograph of 25 mm tape is not a recommendation for every internal width in the table. An illustrated product is not a definitive shopping list.

The tape shown is marked 25 mm: this is not a universal width recommendation for the rims in this guide. Photo: Vittoria.

Before starting, prepare a clean workspace, compatible tools and enough time to finish. Do not attempt your first installation just before an important ride. If a bead resists, using more force or an improvised tool can damage what you were trying to protect; review the technique and manuals or ask for help.

The Air-Liner Tool Kit comes in different versions. The product page lists 26–35 mm for Road and 36–60 mm for MTB. Pay attention if your tire is marked 2.6 inches: we do not assume that use is approved simply because the tool says MTB. Specifically confirm the combination before using it.

To remove the setup, the insert product pages recommend leaving the tire completely deflated for at least one hour before removal. That interval does not mean you should keep going if something is stuck. Avoid levers prohibited by the rim manufacturer, and do not cut the closed ring to follow instructions for an earlier generation.

Testing pressures without losing your baseline

The most useful approach is to keep a familiar baseline and change just one variable. If you introduce a new tire, insert and pressure at once, any improvement or problem will be hard to attribute. Keep a record using the same gauge, comparable conditions and a familiar route, starting cautiously.

Always respect the limits of the complete setup. Internal support does not permit riding below the applicable minimum pressure or eliminate cornering loads. We do not prescribe one pressure in bar for everyone: total mass, load distribution, rim, tire and terrain all affect the decision.

During evaluation, record more than whether you puncture. Watch for air loss, a feeling of tire squirm, impacts and any abnormal change, stopping the test if a problem appears. You do not need to deliberately seek out a bigger rock to justify the purchase. Two rides without a failure do not prove invulnerability.

To decide whether to fit an insert only at the rear or in both wheels, assess where problems occur and which compromises you accept. Do not assume the front wheel never needs protection or that both must always use the same setup. An installation recommendation should explain its reasoning and verify compatibility separately for each wheel.

Calculate the full purchase and maintenance cost

The European product pages checked show €62.95 per insert for these variants. This is the price shown in the international store, not a guaranteed offer for Spain or confirmation of local stock. Before paying, check taxes, shipping, product reference and the actual package contents.

Two inserts at that price total €125.90 before other costs. The full bill may include fitting, sealant, tape if it needs replacing, and tools. Do not add these automatically: reuse compatible items in good condition and avoid duplicating the included valves.

Also ask what your workshop charges for a subsequent tire change with an insert and what happens if it finds damage. Ownership costs include inspection time, not just the initial bill. On a limited budget, compare this work with replacing an unsuitable tire or correcting an identified pressure problem.

Internal protection does not restore a damaged rim or justify continuing to use an unsafe tire. If the real alternative is to repair a faulty setup, that work takes priority. Postponing it by buying new foam is usually an unhelpful way to spend the same money.

What to choose and what we do not promise

Light XC prioritises low weight; Trail accommodates a wider range of tire sizes than Light; Enduro, E-Bike and Downhill offer other configurations for more demanding use. Rather than declare an outright winner, we recommend ruling out incompatible options first, then choosing what meets your needs with manageable maintenance.

Do not confuse claims of riding without air with a guaranteed distance home. If you detect complete pressure loss, stop somewhere safe, inspect the wheel and assess repair or assistance options. The actual condition of the tire and rim takes priority; we do not recommend continuing down a technical descent to find out how long it holds up.

Does Protect Trail fit a 27.5-inch rear wheel?

The Trail product page checked specifies 29 inches. We do not extend that to 27.5. Check for a variant explicitly compatible with your wheel.

Do I need to change the valve?

You need a valve compatible with the insert. The product pages require Multiway and include one 40 mm valve; also check the length your rim needs.

Can I remove the inner tube and keep the same setup?

Not automatically. Tire, rim, tape, valve, sealant and insert must form a compatible tubeless system.

Is this guide a durability test?

No. It is a comparison based on documentation and a buying guide. We do not assign a protection score or promise a percentage reduction in punctures.
