eBike maintenance for beginners: monthly checks before an expensive failure
Workshop
An eBike rarely fails without warning. First come the signs: creaking, poorer shifting, unusual braking, excessive battery use or play developing. The problem is that many owners wait until the bill already hurts.

The monthly inspection I would carry out
You do not need a professional workshop at home. You need consistency. Once a month, or every few rides in mud, check the drivetrain, brakes, wheels, fasteners, battery and suspension. Those 30 minutes could save an entire drivetrain.
1. Chain: the inexpensive sacrificial part
A chain is cheap compared with a cassette and chainring. On an eMTB, letting it wear too far starts eating into everything else. Use a chain-wear gauge and do not wait for skipping. If you do many climbs with strong motor assistance and shift under load, check more often.
Check the chainring too. Sharp teeth, a chain that does not seat properly or pedalling noises are signs of wear. There is no magic here: a powerful motor and poor shifting technique get expensive.

2. Brakes: Do not wait to hear metal
Brakes work harder on an eBike. Check pad thickness, rotor condition, lever feel and noises. If pads are contaminated with oil or an unsuitable cleaner, braking can be terrible even when everything looks new.
| Symptom | Possible cause | What would I do? |
|---|---|---|
| Loud squealing | Contamination or glazing. | Clean correctly; check pads and bedding-in. |
| Spongy brake lever | Air or degraded fluid. | Brake bleed and workshop inspection. |
| Weak braking | Worn pad, small rotor or poor bite. | Measure, change pad compound or fit a larger rotor where appropriate. |
3. Tires and Tubeless
Check pressure before every ride and sealant every few weeks or months, depending on climate. If the bike is stored somewhere hot, sealant dries faster. A supple casing and low pressure can destroy a rim even if the tire 'grips brilliantly'.

4. Battery, connectors and charging
Do not pressure-wash the motor, battery, display or connector areas. Dry thoroughly after washing and check that no covers remain open. An electrical fault after washing is often no coincidence.
5. Bolts and play
An eMTB is heavy, vibrates and takes impacts. Check the stem, handlebar, brake calipers, rotors, thru-axle, suspension linkages, rear shock and pedals. Do not tighten things 'as hard as possible': use the recommended torque when known. Overtightening breaks things too.
6. Suspension
Clean the stanchions, check pressure and record sag. If pressure drops every month or the feel changes significantly, something is wrong. Do not wait for annual servicing if the bike makes noise or the suspension feels harsh and dry.

Quick monthly checklist
- Measure chain.
- Check brake pads and rotors.
- Check tubeless sealant.
- Look for cuts in the tires.
- Clean and lubricate drivetrain.
- Check connectors and the charging-port cover.
- Check critical bolts.
- Listen for new noises on a short test ride.
Maintenance is not about showing off. It is about riding with peace of mind and avoiding bills caused by neglect.
